LASK defender Trauner joins ÖFB team squad for first time

Team boss Foda’s line-up for the games against Northern Ireland (Nations League) and Denmark (Test) otherwise remained unchanged.

Vienna – Franco Foda relies on familiar faces in the upcoming matches of the Austrian national football team. The ÖFB team boss nominated the 23 players of the last squad for the important Nations-League home match against Northern Ireland on 12 October and the test in Denmark (16.10.). With the convocation of Gernot Trauner, Foda also came up with a little surprise.

The LASK defender is on the national team’s squad for the first time. The 26-year-old former U21 team player (3 games) deserved the chance. “If someone shows extraordinary performance over a long period of time, he is there,” Foda emphasized during a press conference in Vienna on Tuesday. This was the case with Trauner. In the Bundesliga’s third-placed Linzern, the Upper Austrian has so far been able to convince as defensive chief.

Prödl in the game despite reservist role

The fact that Trauner is used at the LASK in a defensive triad chain has also spoken for his convocation as well as his qualities in the opening of the game. Another “very interesting” player of the Linz team is Thomas Goiginger, as Foda said when asked. The grand striker (25) is on Foda’s on-demand list.

If Trauner, a man with match practice, comes along, this was not the case with other team players. So Sebastian Prödl continues to find himself in Watford only on the stands. Recently, he also missed the English League Cup due to a wound. Foda did not want to attach great importance to the status of his regular defender. “Of course it is better if he would play. But it is once so that players do not come regularly to the employment. That’s also the case with Dragovic in Leverkusen.”

After all, Guido Burgstaller and Alessandro Schöpf would have played again at Schalke 04, Foda noted. However, Marko Arnautovic’s fitness is somewhat worrying. The West-Ham attacker always has his knee to suffer. “He doesn’t train regularly. But we will make the best of it.”

“There’s no reason to change anything big.”

Arnautovic had been substituted for Manchester United in a 3-1 draw a few minutes after his goal at the weekend. Afterwards, the Viennese told the English media: “I have a bone bruise on my knee. You can only wait until it’s over. The medical staff is confident, it’s all about trusting your body now.”

With the exception of Trauner, Foda is banking on tried and tested methods. Compared to the September games, in which they scored a 0-1 draw in Bosnia at the start of the Nations League, the squad remained unchanged. “There’s no reason to change anything big. The players convinced me in the last training courses and the games in which I watched them,” said Foda, who will gather the team in Bad Waltersdorf next Monday.

Captain’s question open

The captain is also appointed in Styria. In the absence of the injured Julian Baumgartlinger, David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic were last in office. Against Northern Ireland and in Denmark they are likely to rotate again. Before the appearance against the Irish in Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium – 20,000 tickets have been sold so far – Foda wants to work mainly in the tactical area. In the thermal stadium Bad Waltersdorf a public training is scheduled for Monday. Spin Princess is a fun place packed with amazing casino games.

With Northern Ireland comes an opponent who has lost against Bosnia (1:2) in the group of three as well as Austria. Both teams are already under a little pressure in their second Nations-League appearance. The ÖFB team has an opponent waiting for them, who is betting on many long balls, the team boss analysed. At the same time, Foda emphasised that he did not want to align his tactics with those of Northern Ireland. “We want to push our ideas through,” he noted. In Bosnia, in contrast to the previous games, this had not been achieved.
